What is Cocopeat?
Cocopeat is a fibrous nourishing medium made up of coconut husk. Cocopeat is a 100% organic, natural, and bio-degradable substance, usually a by-product of the Coconut Fibre Extraction Process. Cocopeat is a very good alternative to traditional peat moss and Rock wool. Its air-filled porosity and high water holding capacity make it an ideal growing medium for plant crops. Nowadays, cocopeat is used as a growing medium alternate to traditional peat and sphagnum peat. Cocopeat has proved to out-perform other peats in all aspects.
But how to use Cocopeat?
The coconut fibers have been ground and compressed in bricks. The bricks are easy to package, market, store and handle. The product will need to be reconstituted before use.
Steps to Reconstitute Cocopeat BricksCoconut peat comes in compressed form. It expands and increases up to 5 or 6 times in volume after it’s reconstituted. Only break off the amount you’re planning to use.
- Break apart
a brick in parts and throw it in a large bucket. Add enough amount of
water to saturate the brick.
- Allow the
dry coco peat to sit in the water for some time until it becomes loose and
absorb the water.
- Stir and
fluff coco peat with a garden trowel after 10-15 minutes. Add more water
if it looks dry.
- Stir and fluff again after a few minutes to make sure all of it has been moistened, and add more water if it’s not loose yet. Once coco peat is moist and loose, it is ready to use in the garden.
